A friend and I are planning on getting into drifting and we have roughly $2.5k to work with for a car. Both of us aren’t very good at wrenching so I was thinking about getting a car that is well documented like a 240sx or a Miata (duh). However, NA prices are currently pretty outrageous and the 240s suffer from the drift tax.

Here is a list of what we are considering: 240sx (if we can find a decentish one), Miata, E36, E46, RX-8, GS300, IS300, G35/350Z. Are there any other cars that you guys would suggest checking out?

NA’s, and Miatas in general are pretty bad drift cars. The short, almost square wheelbase combined with low power means that 1.) you’ll have to go muuuuuch faster and really throw your car much harder than a comparable Z or whatever to get a decent drift which is not the best starting out for obvious reasons... and 2.) once you’re sideways the car will try to recover very quickly and snap back in place, as apposed to the smooth transition you could find with something else. It’s definitely doable, but characteristics that make a Miata so damn lovely in just about every other circumstance makes them subpar drifters compared to similarly priced cars.

E36/46 is a good bet. Strip it, remove unnecessary electronics and as your skills and mechanical knowledge grow it will be simple to add power and upgrade suspension.

Despite the drift tax I think 240's are the best option. There are so many cheap parts to fix or upgrade and so many people that can help you solve a problem. It is probably the most forgiving and flexible car to learn how to drift in.

E36's and E46's are becoming much more prevalent at drift events, but I’ve seen a few people struggle to get theirs dialed in to work well. If you’re starting out it’s hard to beat a 240.

... Both of us aren’t very good at wrenching ...

Oh don’t worry, you’ll get better. Beating on cars at a track leads to repairs. Lack of funding leads to you doing it yourself by watching how others did it on youtube or by getting advice from people at drift events. Sorting through who’s advice you should be taking is a learned skill. Try to learn that early.

Since you’re in this together you might discuss up front how well you two are going to handle it once one of you slaps it into some unforgiving object that you weren’t suppose to slap it into. I guarantee one of you is going to do some damage and feel very humbled. The other is likely to be very pissed about their lost time and money as a result of the damage.

3rd gen Supra. You can find a derelict one for next to nothing, unlike the A80, where even the most beaten up automatic non-turbo is still 9 grand.

Mid 90s C4.

Or an sn95. Which has lots of available parts. Duel caliper hand brake set up, angle kits, coilovers, short throw shifter. And enough power to get the job done from the factory. Just look at chrisfix and his mustang.

From what I’ve read and heard from others, a 240SX is the quintessential drift car for a reason—if you can find one without the drift tax, the aftermarket for them going sideways is second to none, swap options abound, and good setups have been done countless times before. Tire sizes and wheel options shouldn’t be a problem, either. Lots of places to go to make them work well, and a good chassis to learn in.

The 350Z is likely another good car to give a long look. The VQ engine is powerful enough that (if it’s healthy) even at stock power you shouldn’t have a problem spinning the rears, it’s pretty reliable despite the abuse of drifting, and again the chassis and aftermarket will serve you well. I’m skeptical that you’d find one in your budget, but it never hurts to look. Parts are likely to be a bit more expensive (and as tire size increases, often so does the rubber), but the Z33 has a lot of positives in its favor: the wheelbase is not too short to be snappy in transitions or too long to feel lazy, decent suspension geometry (that the aftermarket can always improve upon), and the car itself isn’t super-rare. Replacement parts like engines and transmissions won’t be impossible to find, if needed.

As I see it, really the only negative to these are initial cost because of aforementioned drift tax, and the Z’s curb weight could be lighter. But I’m just a guy with zero experience typing on the internet, because I went a completely different route and wanted to build a more difficult [read: expensive] drift car.

Thanks for the input on the NA. I was sort of guessing that they would be snappy but its good to hear from an actual owner. Right now the E36/46 cars are looking pretty ideal for what we will be doing. Know anything about how RX8s are sideways? They seem to have a pretty long wheelbase.

I don’t, we’ve got a couple resident drifters here, hopefully one of them will see this.

Here’s a good article to help out with the basics of how you’ll want to set your car up http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/2210/PageID/3817/Basic-Drift-Chassis-Setup-Part-1.aspx

All the 240s near me in the price range are beat to hell or autos. If a decent one comes up we will probably go for it but there hasn’t been a good one for months. Also you bring up a good point about wrecking the car. We have a pretty clear place we can use for practice but I will be sure to discuss that with him.

E36, or 350z. I imagine an is300 is too expensive but if you can afford that than you can afford a Z. I can’t say I know how well a z drifts but it’s got a close ratio 6 speed and decent power.

The gs300 will be expensive to modify, it will need a manual swap, angle mods wont be readily available, it’s weight may lead to breaking welded diffs often(my SC has broken 3 welded diffs and eaten two open diffs). If your gonna go the hard route why not start with a v8 ls400 or sc400?

6-speed G35 owner here. They’re pretty cheap, quite similar to a 350Z under the skin, and are a pretty rowdy chassis even stock. I’d recommend an 03 6MT sedan if you want to weld the diff (04+ 6MT sedans and all 6MT coupes had vLSDs). A turn knob for a 240 will work if you ream out the handbrake shaft. Wire a two-position switch into the orange wire on the yaw sensor in the centre console to fully defeat VDC. They’re so much more car than an E36 and are more inclined to oversteer than an E46. Steering angle isn’t the greatest, but a set of rack spacers should fix that fairly inexpensively.

If I can find a 240 that isn’t made of bondo I’ll jump for it. The Z sounds perfect. Sadly the manuals seem to be holding their value much better than the autos since there are only autos near the budget. Also good luck with your project.

Damn that sounds pretty tempting. You got yours for a steal compared to the ones in FL. All of these are 200k+ mile autos that are somehow $4k.

Yeah never mind on the IS and GS. Seems like too much work to get to Z level performance and for way too much. Also good luck with the SC, it looks like a lot of fun.

No surprise there. Yeah, they do have head gasket issues, which is why they’re typically so cheap. Apparently they weren’t torqued properly from the factory, but if the torque spec on them is fixed they’re just fine.

There’s this but it sort of seems like a CP.

Then there is this which has obviously been wrecked at some point and is an auto.

Another good option is an SN95/New Edge Mustang GT. They should be pretty cheap in Florida.

Just wondering, doesn’t the solid rear axle in the SN95 make it a pain to slide well?

Thanks. im interested to know what you and your friend eventually choose.

Id also add that whatever you choose would benefit from being really cheap for a couple reasons. 1.) A second parts car will be very beneficial for for expensive parts like diffs, subframes, and big parts, aswell as when little hard to find parts break.(lca bolt for example)

2.) In my experiance(limited) The more afraid you are of crashing the more likely you are of making a mistake. If your worried about totaling an expensive car it may effect your driving negatively.(you’ll focus on the birm your about to hit rather than focusing on getting in front of it.)

Not really, it just requires different technique than an IRS car. They slide really well so long as the driver’s on-throttle. They spin really quickly off-throttle, though.
